Sciences of Conservation and Archaeology is an academic journal sponsored by Shanghai Museum. Editorial board of Sciences of Conservation and Archaeology is in charge of its editing and publishing.

With the Restoration Department of Shanghai Museum and the Conservation Laboratory established in 1958 and 1960 respectively, Shanghai Museum became one of the earliest academic research institutions of conservation science and archaeology in the domestic museum system. During 1985~1988, the Conservation Laboratory compiled and printed 14 Foreign Nature Science and Archaeological Technologies which are the predecessors of Sciences of Conservation and Archaeology.

In 1989, aiming to fully report the domestic and overseas scientific achievements of archaeology and enable more relevant professionals and amateurs to understand, communicate and exchange traditional or cutting-edge methods in terms of conservation and archaeology, Shanghai Museum formally launched Sciences of Conservation and Archaeology so as to encourage the application of science and technology in the field of cultural relic research, raise the cultural relic conservation levels of our country and propel the in-depth research of archaeometry. The first editor-in-chief was MA Cheng-yuan, the former curator of Shanghai Museum.

In 1993, the journal obtained the CN Number (CN31-1652/K) and the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN1005-1538) and was awarded “ the Prominent Scientific Journal in Shanghai” by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, the Press and Publication Bureau of Shanghai and Shanghai Association for Science and Technology. The journal was included by the famous international abstract journal AATA from 1994. The journal was published quarterly from 2003 and bi-monthly from 2017. Inclusion by China Journal Net and Wanfang Database makes it become one of the source journals of Chinese Academic Journal Comprehensive Evaluation Database and Chinese Core Journal (Selection) Database. In 2009, the journal was awarded “RCCSE Chinese Core Academic Journal”. The current editor-in-chief is YANG Zhi-gang, the curator of Shanghai Museum.
