Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy scroll relics on either paper or silk are fragile. Cracking is the most common and wide spread type of damage. Severe cases of cracking can cause fatal damage to these cultural relics. In this paper, various causes are analyzed of cracking in calligraphy and painting. Then various methods are described for repairing cracks and improvements in the mounting process that can effectively reduce or avoid cracking. In this way, calligraphic and painting heritage can be passed on.
