This paper is mainly concerned with the impact of restoration putty materials used on iron relics. Commonly used putty materials were tested using dampheat aging, saturated acidic water vapor corrosion and a xenon lamp light aging test. The results show that different putty materials show different amounts of iron corrosion. The applicability of putty could be rated on the basis of its degree of corrosion of iron. Based on two aging test rounds, this work shows that lime is more suitable for the conservation and restoration of iron relics.
